Dear Kids – Dunderbeck

Dear Kids,

When I was a kid – and even before I was born – my father was a camp counselor. This means that I know way more camp songs than nursery rhymes. Which means you guys do too. Our favorite song is Dunderbeck (lyrics below).

My favorite thing about our mutual love of camp songs is that they really aren’t any worse theme-wise than some of those nursery rhymes. For instance, ‘Ring Around the Roses’ is about the Plague and the baby can’t be in great shape at the end of ‘Rock-A-Bye Baby’. ‘Dunderbeck’ may be about eating cats and dogs, but at least it’s funny and sounds great shouted at the top of your lungs!

What are your favorite camp songs, blogosphere?

Oh Dunderbeck, oh Dunderbeck,
How could you be so mean?
To ever have invented
The sausage meat machine?
Now all the dogs and cats and rats
Will never more be seen.
They’ve all been ground to sausages
In Dunderbeck’s machine.

One day a boy come walking
A’walking to the store.
He bought a pound of sausages
And laid them on the floor.
He whistled and he whisteled
And he whistled up a tune.
And all the little sausages
Danced around the room.

One day the darn thing busted
And it refused to go.
So, Dunderbeck got in it
The reason for to know.
His wife was having nightmares
Came walking in her sleep.
She gave the crank a heck of a yank
And Dunderbeck was meat!
