Dear Blogosphere – Children’s Books We Need

Dear Blogoshere,

Tell me, what children’s books – in your humble opinion – still need to be written? What topics still need to be covered or need to be covered again?

Here are my thoughts:

  • Street smarts
  • Internet safety
  • Bullies: walk away
  • Why you stink (smell bad) – boys will love it šŸ˜‰

Of course, the best children’s books are simple, entertaining, NOT condescending, and NOT frightening if they are covering those difficult topics.

The best example I know of a children’s book handling a tough topic well is the Berenstain Bears’ “LearnĀ AboutĀ Strangers”. Mama Bear, you always know just what to say!

We need more children’s books about how to deal with tragedy, such as the Boston Marathon bombing and 9/11. It’s all over the media and sometimes kids are confronted with this type of “war” long before they’re able to cope with it on their own and need some guidance. Mr. Rogers did a nice piece here http://www.fredrogers.org/FRC/par-tragic-events.html. Thanks for asking the question, Meg.

  2. That’s a good idea! Thanks!
