Last night I came looking for you for bedtime. What I found was you at the front door, armed with a flashlight and looking for some darkness to dispel. Without a moment’s hesitation you turned the deadbolt, opened the door, and stepped out in to the night. Just like that; a two year-old out in the world all alone.
I cannot tell you how terrified I was to watch that happen. I had no idea it was so easy for you to wander off! It took no time at all for me to realize that you could easily do this in the middle of the night while Daddy and I slept peacefully and unaware.
Not too long ago Daddy and I read an article about a grocery store clerk who found a three year-old girl huddled near the entrance of his store at 4 am in a foot of snow. She had woken up in the middle of the night and – convinced her mother was at the grocery store and not sleeping in the room next to her – had put on her slippers and walked nearly a mile through the snow to the store. Terrifying!
Her story is now my cautionary tale. I can promise that I will not be sleeping very much until a trusty chain bolt is installed on all of our exterior doors; way up high where the little inmates can’t reach them.
